De zon, is de centrale ster van het zonnestelsel, waar ook de Aarde en de andere planeten deel van uitmaken. Vanaf de Aarde gezien, is de Zon overdag het helderste object aan de hemel.
Zon
De Zon is een G-type hoofdreeksster uit de middelgrote klasse. Heeft een massa van ongeveer 1,989 × 1030 kg, wat overeenkomt met 332.946 maal de massa van de Aarde. Haar diameter is 1.392.684 km met een onzekerheid van 130 km (Institute of Astronomy University of Hawaii "Space Observations of Mercury Transits Yield Precise Solar Radius"). Dit komt overeen met een diameter van 109 maal die van de Aarde.
De gemiddelde afstand van de Zon tot de Aarde bedraagt ongeveer 1,496 x 108 km (Institute of Astronomy University of Hawaii, "Sun"), welke gelijk is aan 1 AE (Astronomische Eenheid).

Een zonsverduistering treedt op als bij nieuwe maan de maan precies tussen de Zon en de Aarde staat, en het zonlicht blokkeert.
Als de planeet Venus vanaf de Aarde gezien voor de Zon schuift, dan spreekt men van een Venusovergang. Deze komen voor in een patroon dat zich over het algemeen elke 243 jaar herhaalt, met paren van overgangen die acht jaar van elkaar gescheiden zijn, gescheiden door lange perioden van 121,5 jaar en 105,5 jaar. De periodiciteit is een weerspiegeling van het feit dat de baanperioden van Aarde en Venus dicht bij 8:13 en 243:395 commensurabiliteit zijn.
Als de planeet Mercurius vanaf de Aarde gezien voor de Zon schuift, dan spreekt men van een Mercuriusovergang. Dit verschijnsel treedt 13 à 14 keer per eeuw op.
